Paragraph 1:Question: Perna, Klein, & McClendon discuss that state policy makers need to propose directions for future research that can improve higher education attainment. What areas of research do you believe needs to be expounded upon and why?(put reference)
Parragh 2 respond to this:
that at its core are built on capitalism. Graduation rates, career services, how many students are able to graduate in four years – all of that to lead them eventually earning a job or a career to contribute to society. See that in itself is my issue. I see the launch of performance-based funding another ploy to continue to run higher education as businesses. I think we are on a deeper ideological issue as Dar (2012) speaks to in the varying dynamics of politics. I think when we look at the ideological chart, there seems to be a disconnect between treating higher education as the public good that it should be. By not subscribing to that, it allows us to move to performance based funding which I will say does lead to innovation and creates more data for us to review. But at the same time it’s at the expense of underrepresented groups not having the chance to be at the table. I believe colleges will continue to only care about how they are funded which means they will only recruit students with high GPAs and high test scores. We all know that favors white students and not Black, Latinx, and indengious populations. So to sum it up, I do not think performance based funding is the way to go. Hopefully once we get out the recession we can create more taxes that would allow for more students to go to college through state funding. Until we get past our legislatures believing that college is a private good, it will be an uphill battle. But I believe political perceptions and dynamics can change.
