Section 1: In 750-900 words, identify and discuss one area (race, gender, sexuality, class, immigration) where you have been stronger in your cultural awareness—i.e. where you have been able to resist the causes and rationalizations for perpetuating prejudice and have been able to fight against discrimination. In discussing this strength, first use concepts on the causes and rationalizations for prejudice from the “Prejudice and Its Causes” reading. Then you must use terminology on the specific type of oppression from our course texts that relate to the issue of diversity you are discussing— for example, Tatum and/or Rios for race; Anyon and/or Gorski for class; the Koppelman and/or Lorber for sexuality; and Blumenfeld and/or Koppelman for hetersosexism.
Section 2: In 750-900 words, identify and discuss one area of cultural oppression (racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, anti-immigration) where you have been weaker in your cultural awareness—i.e. how you have contributed to prejudice and oppression in this area, even if unintentionally. As with Section 1, you must use key concepts/terminology from both the “Prejudice and Its Causes” reading and from the appropriate readings on the specific kind of oppression to help discuss that area of weakness.
