Answer ALL the following questions in your OWN words and DO NOT use any sources outside of these readings. My professor uses Turnitin system.
-What is your view of the current state of “race” and “race relations/the ‘racial hierarchy” in the U.S.? Do you think there is a black/white dichotomy in the U.S? Why or why not?
-Explain what “race” means according to Omi & Winant (1993), Roberts (2011) and Bonilla Silva (2003).
-Where do they differ and where do they overlap in their understandings?
-How do you think “race” and “race relations” in the U.S. will be viewed and understood 20 years from now? Why?
-Support your ideas with evidence from the readings, including Roberts (2011), Omi and Winant (1994), Bonilla Silva (2003), Zhou (2004), and Portes & Zhou (1993).
**Make sure you include:
a. How Roberts (2011), Omi & Winant (1994) and Bonilla Silva (2003) define and explain “race.” Compare and contrast their definitions.
b. Many of these authors focus on the black/white dichotomy in the U.S. How would you incorporate other racial and ethnic groups into this, to create a broader understanding of “race” and “race relations/ the racial
hierarchy”?
c. What do you think “race” and “race relations” looks like currently in the U.S. and what will it look in twenty years? Use Zhou (2004) and Portes & Zhou (1993) and any of the other readings that will help you to answer this question.
You can use only INDIRECT quotes (paraphrasing) and then put year of the reading with page number. For example:
“Jones (2011:54) says that the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain”.
