You continue to work in your role as a HRM consultant to Optimal Woman, Inc. (OWI), a company with facilities in the eastern United States. As a reminder, OWI manufactures and distributes health and beauty aids for women over age 40. During your first month on the job, you identified several areas of concern and presented strategies to bring the organization into compliance.
Now that the organization is doing well, the CEO wants you to continue your role and assist over the next several years. As you continue in your role, you also learn the following:
1. Within the next three years, the company plans to expand into the California and Mexico where some employment laws may be different and the cultural trends more prevalent in areas such as the following:
legalized use of marijuana Mandatory or statutory sick pay Aging workforce
2. Employee facts
Employees in some positions earn the federal minimum wage per hour, but the minimum wage in the states where these employees work is higher than the federal rate.
Some temporary and part-time new hires will work full time hours. They are being forced to enroll under ACA because they are not classified correctly by the organization, and are denied coverage under the company’s health insurance plan.
Some office workers hope to organize through a labor union because they believe there are poor and unfair working conditions
Workers in the warehouse and distribution centers are members of a local Teamsters union and contracts are set to expire within a year. They desire collective bargaining to keep and/or increase the following:
i. Compensation
ii. Benefits and
iii. Healthcare
3. Other
In advance of the planned expansion, many employees are beginning to use social media to advance their cause including the use of computers and social media during normal work hours
4. The organization (OWI) wants to meet the expected demands for all its workers and needs to focus on cost during the expansion, which is why your help is valuable during the planned expansion over the next 3 years.
Guidelines for Assignment
Consider all the areas of concern in relation to company expansion into California and Mexico and consider the U.S. and international employment laws you need to address to be successful in the expansion.
Review the employee facts in number 2 above, and address the various employment laws and collective bargaining necessary to ensure the organization’s success in the expansion.
Describe your plan to implement strategies to address employees’ social media use to ensure a successful expansion while minimizing external risks to the organization.
Based on this expansion, briefly describe the challenges and opportunities the HRM will face in implementing the laws, providing education and training for managers, etc.
After your conclusion, add a paragraph about your expected outcomes of the organization at the end of the 3-year expansion. (Note: with solid research on the areas within your paper, your expected outcomes should flow from the supportive evidence, strategies, etc., which you should have already provided throughout the paper).
Writing Guidance and Tips:
1. Make sure you have an introduction (with purpose statement), separate the sections by using headings, and a Conclusion.
2. PLEASE use in-text citations to avoid plagiarism. All cited sources must appear in the reference list.
3. The 8-10 page paper must be written in APA 6th Edition format. Please include a cover (title) page and reference page(s) that are not included in the required 8-10 page count.
4. Use a minimum of 8-10 references from the required and optional readings or from your own research with at least four (5) sources from the TUW Library, i.e., ProQuest Central or EBSCO Multi-search databases, etc. Rule of thumb: The number of references you use should at least equal the number of pages in your assignment (e.g., 8 pages = 8 references, 10 pages = 10 references).
