In previous assignments, you have identified various performance problems, selected one problem to examine how it can be mitigated through the design of an instructional intervention, and identified possible data sources and tools you can use to further diagnose the problem. One of the most frequent needs assessment tasks is to clarify the desired state so that you know when the problem has been solved. In order to do this, you must know exactly how a task or procedure should be performed, and instructional designers most often determine this by conducting a task/performance analysis. Once the desired performance is clarified in detail, it then becomes rather easy to identify the types of learning outcomes the instructional intervention will require.
For this assignment, you will conduct and report the results of a task/performance analysis on your performance problem and use the results to identify the learning outcomes required for an instructional intervention to mitigate the performance problem.
Your assignment should:
Build upon your Week 1 and Week 2 assignments, and provide a brief description of the performance problem and the desired performance (the task you need performed with success).
Identify the type(s) of learning outcomes (using Gagne’s taxonomy) that are primary and secondary (if needed) to the task. (Is the task primarily one requiring application of verbal information? Intellectual skills? Cognitive strategy? Attitude? Psychomotor skill?)
Describe the procedures you followed to conduct your task/performance analysis and who served as an expert.
Provide the results of your analysis—this might be a list of steps or some sort of graphic to show the sequencing required or the possible paths one could follow to complete the task as desired. [Note: Numerous examples of outcomes of task analysis procedures are available in the resources listed for this week as well as online.]
