Part A: Essay: Compare Progressivism with the New Deal
Your project should follow the traditional essay format:
- Begin with an introduction in which you briefly summarize your topic. In one or a few sentences, express a thesis, or point of view. Your thesis will be a personal response to the question you are answering. You will express a personal view about a historic issue.
- Body paragraphs will make up the bulk of your essay. Use the body paragraphs to support and defend your thesis. Remember that each body paragraph should include a topic sentence. Other sentences in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.
- Finish your essay with a conclusion. Summarize what you have said in the essay and boldly recap your ideas. Do NOT simply restate your thesis.
- Cite all sources correctly. Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, which may be accessed online or in many libraries. Include a bibliography at the end of your project.
Write a paper of at least 1500 words (five typed double-spaced pages) in which you answer the following question.
Compare progressivism (1900 to 1920) with the New Deal (1933 to 1941). Were they more alike or different? Did progressivism have the same goal(s) as the New Deal? Were these two movements expressions of the same idea, or were they unrelated episodes in American history? Explain your answer.
You must use AT LEAST THREE PRIMARY SOURCES (documents, records, or accounts from the time in which the events happened) and AT LEAST TWO SECONDARY SOURCES (textbooks, general books on history).
If you do research online, make sure you are using scholarly, reliable sources. Be sure to answer all parts of the question.
As you research your essay, consider:
- the goals, objectives and methods of progressive reform
- the goals, objectives, and methods of the New Deal
- the major accomplishments of the progressive movement
- the major accomplishments of the New Deal
- assessment of the changes brought about by progressivism
- assessment of the changes brought about by the New Deal
- the contributions of different leaders in the progressive movement
- the contributions of different individuals in the New Deal
