Treatment Session

This treatment session is designed for a 7-year-old boy (JD), who is referred to skilled occupational therapy services due to decrease fine motor and social skills. Due to JD impairment with fine motor skills, he has difficulty with grasping small objects to perform basic task and difficulty with handwriting while in school. This impairment makes it difficult for JD to complete his homework, participate in activities within groups that require fine motor performance, manipulate small objects and be independent with dressing. Research indicates that children who have difficulty with these physical skills have lower self-esteem and are socially alienated (Mandich, Polatajko, & Rodger, 2003). Skilled occupational therapy can help JD improve his pincer grasp and grip strength which are a necessary task for a child to complete in order to color, handwrite, and participate in group activities in social settings. JD will attend occupational therapy treatment session for one hour. Within this treatment session
Problem statement: JD demonstrates difficulty manipulating small objects, poor handwriting skills and completing basic activities of daily living task (ex. Tying shoelaces) thus, taking him longer than usual and requiring added help with these activities.
Intervention 1: Describe your clinical intervention details here.
Pick it (Preparatory task/Occupation): With the use of cotton balls and clothes pins have the child pick up the cotton balls with the clothes pins and place them in the jar. Initially try with the dominant hand and progress with the opposite hand. To grade this activity use different sizes of cotton balls (not to tiny!) and different sizes of clothes pins (Provides varying resistance). This task works on pincer grasp/tripod grasp, opposition and open web space, and hand-eye coordination.

Intervention 2 Describe your clinical intervention details here.
Sidewalk chalk: (Occupation) This activity works on fine and gross motor movement with emphasis on how posture plays an important role in handwriting skill development. With jumbo chalk have the kids free play in a defined area of the sidewalk. Progress this activity by having child connect lines on different surfaces. This works on visual and motor skills that are necessary for letter formation. Games like tic-tac toe and hangman can be played. Chalk can also be broken into chunks to adapt for varying handgrips.

Intervention 3
- Caring beads: (Activity/Occupation) Occupational therapist will collect beads with meaning and use colors of self-regulation. Explain to the child that green means excited and pink means kind etc. Have the child choose colors based off how they feel toward the activity, a person or their favorite foods. Using pipe cleaners and beads have child string up beads onto the pipe cleaners. Various sizes of pipe cleaners can be used for length and thickness for size. Once the beads are strung up, have child tie them at the end and give to a friend or family member. This activity is twofold in that it works on fine motor skill development and showing signs of empathy towards others. Sometimes kids learn better with social interaction with others.
