Rhetorical Analysis: Deconstructing an Argument Rhetoric is the study of how writers and speakers use words to influence an audience. A rhetorical analysis is an essay that breaks-down a work of non-fiction into parts and then explains how the parts work together to create a certain effect—whether to persuade,entertain or inform. A rhetorical analysis should explore the author’s goals, the techniques used, examples of those techniques, and the effectiveness of those techniques. When writing a rhetorical analysis, you discuss how the author makes an argument and whether or not the approach used is successful. This third, and final, paper is a rhetorical analysis of the article, “What We Talk About When

Fully introduce the text you are analyzing and provide a brief summary of the author’s argument. Then identify and describe how the author utilizes FOUR persuasive appeals (rhetorical strategies of ethos, logos, and pathos) to advance her/his argument and persuade the readers. (each one will be its own paragraph)

You must provide examples (specific textual references, paraphrases, and direct quotes) from the essay to support your claims.

 You need to describe the overall structure of the essay (how/why is the format effective)

Lastly, evaluate the extent to which the argument is convincing based on the overall essay.
Rhetorical Analysis Essay Elements to Consider as You Write:

This is not a research paper. You will only have one source on your work cited.

This paper needs to be written in third person narrative. (The author claims. . . )

No first or second person pronouns (I, me, we, you, yours, etc.)

Introduce the full essay and the author in the introduction paragraph, then refer to the article by the author’s last name for the remainder of the paper.
