For this assessment you need to prepare, develop and complete the following:
- Emergency Risk Register,
- Pre-Drill Preparation Checklist,
- Carry out an emergency evacuation drill,
- Complete a running sheet for the above drill, and
- Develop and complete an Emergency Debriefing checklist.
It is important to note that each State, Territory and the Commonwealth government is responsible for their own legislation in this area. Use the legislation that is relevant to your state or Territory. Links to your government’s regulator are on the OLS, WSI Library Site.

Task
The assessment task is made up of two parts as follows:
Part 1
- Introduction – Select a workplace (real or a scenario where you make up the details) and write an overview that describes the workplace (including industry, type of work performed, number of workers, nature of the hazards at the workplace, management structure, building layout, size and location of the workplace etc.).
- Now create an Emergency Risk Register that clearly identifies all potential emergencies (list at least five) that could occur in this workplace e.g. Fire, earthquakes, flooding, chemical spills, electrical, radiological and biological incidents, civil disturbances, bomb threats, workplace violence, external vehicle incidents etc.
Your Emergency Risk Register should be in table format and contain the following headings: Potential emergency / possible cause and location / Consequence / Risk Rank / Emergency Response.
Note:
Emergency response is the organizing, coordinating, and directing of available resources in order to respond to the event and bring the emergency under control.
Emergency evacuation is the immediate and urgent movement of people away from the threat or actual occurrence of a hazard. Examples range from a small scale evacuation of a building due to a storm or fire to a large scale evacuation of a district because of a flood.
Part 2
- Provide a list of documents relating to an Emergency Plan e.g. floor plans/assembly areas, emergency instructions to notify emergency services, firefighting equipment testing and first aid boxes checklists, pre-evacuation procedures, training requirements, contractor induction, information, training etc. This can be set out in a table or a dot point format.
Explain their purpose and how they fit in with the Emergency Plan.
- Develop and complete a Pre-Drill Preparation Checklist, consider planning processes, training, notification, debriefs and lessons learned, and attach as Appendix A.
- Choose one of the identified potential emergencies from your Emergency Risk Register from Part 1 and implement the procedure by being involved in a (simulated) emergency evacuation drill exercise. Carry out your emergency evacuation drill and document the exercise.
Your chosen emergency evacuation drill exercise can involve part of the organization (i.e. just a handful of co-workers such as one department) or the whole organization depending on the opportunity to actually conduct or simulate the emergency drill.
- Develop and complete a Running Sheet of the (simulated) emergency evacuation drill exercise from start (sound emergency alarm) to finish (emergency drill ‘stand down”). This sheet should be in Table format and list all actions, those involved, times and comments and attach as Appendix B.
- Briefly explain your responsibility in the process. That is, were you the Health and Safety Representative or committee member, Controller or Warden, security officer, the Emergency coordinator, a first aid officer or an evacuee or observer?
