The student will:
- Interact intentionally with older adults (65 years or older) living independently in the community.
- Assess and recognize the functional physical, emotional, and mental needs of older adults living in the community.
- Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills with the older adult.
- Adapt and use the appropriate manner of communication for age; culture; and ethnicity.
- Describe the role of the nurse when providing care to older adults in the community.
- Discuss previously held beliefs/assumptions about how older adults live independently in the community.
- Assess older adults’ risks and understand the importance of weighing risks and benefits when caring for older adults.
- Maintain professionalism during the interview.
- Introduce yourself as a Montgomery College Nursing Student who is in the second semester of nursing school. Explain the course (NURS 126) and share the Clinical Learning Outcomes (page 1) with the older adult.
- Inform the older adult that you are interviewing him/her for a class project and that you will share information obtained during the interview with your teacher and fellow students.
- Inform the older adult that you will only use their initials to identify them and assure them that you will not share any other identifiers.
- Thank the older adult for their time and for sharing this information with you.
- Assignment must be completed in essay format using the six content areas to construct paragraphs. Assignments not completed in essay format will not be graded.
