The module is assessed with a single assessment point.
• In the report you will be asked to outline the SEN support plan for a child with SEND including teaching, intervention strategies and a specific intervention programme.
• You can complete your own case study or choose from an existing case study.
• The report will assess learning outcomes 1-5.
Learning Outcomes
You will be required to submit a written report. In the report you will be asked to plan and evaluate an effective intervention for a child with SEND. The report will assess the following learning outcomes:
L1 – Critically discuss the main issues pertaining to the policy, legislation and guidance in relation to SEND in early years/education.
This learning outcome is assessing whether you understand main concepts of SEND & inclusion. Having a theoretical understanding will support you in your everyday teaching, for example, understanding the different models of inclusion and how this impacts on a child’s right to education. This section is an opportunity for you to think about your own perspective of inclusion and to develop an inclusive pedagogy. Be critical & creative.
L2 – Reflect with insight to evaluate effective educational intervention methods to respond to the personal, social, psycho-motor and emotional needs of children with special needs
A bit of a tongue twister but essentially, as an educator you will need to tune into, identify and respond to a range of developmental needs. In this part of the assessment you are exploring the different teaching methods, strategies and interventions you can use for a child. Once you become an educator, this will be part and parcel of your everyday practice.
L3 – Critically examine the concept of inclusion and inclusive education.
Inclusion is a state of becoming, not a state of being, and within this assessment you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your developing knowledge of inclusion. Your writing style and approach will be taken into account and your own inclusive pedagogy. It is important to remember here that there isn’t one way to inclusion, people have different schools of thoughts and beliefs and it is important to consider your own perspective when writing.
L4 – Demonstrate critical decision making on the most effective interventions for an inclusive education experience.
Intervention plays a central part of SEN support, but it is important that the approaches we choose have a good evidence base. Throughout the assessment, you will be considering whether your chosen approach works and what critiques exist about the intervention.
L5 – Demonstrate advanced skills in report writing.
At L6 it is really important that you develop your academic writing style. There are top tips within this brief to help you shape and mould your assessment over time. Assessments should not be completed with just days to go before the deadline. It is a work in progress.
