Description

Intercultural Communication Final Paper

During the course of our conversations this semester we have considered the evolution of communication, while giving particular attention to the interplay of intercultural contexts and resulting consequences.

Your final task is this:

Write a detailed 4 to 6 page paper discussing what you’ve learned in this course in regard to intercultural communication. Do not merely list notes taken or quote passages from textbook or lecture. Much like your forum responses, use the notes to guide your thinking. At the beginning of the course we discussed the active, creative aspect of thinking. Memorization and recall is handy but perhaps more important is understanding the interrelation, the utility, of that which was memorized. The point being made is that thinking is challenging.

I expect that with each mention of something pulled from text or lecture, you strengthen it with your own flavor and reaction. Consider the many aspects of intercultural communication and how they apply to our immediate lives and also the emphasis on a global scale.

Specifically, within your work include these three elements:

Include a forecast of where you think the focus on intercultural communication will be needed in this millennium.

Discuss whether or not it is acceptable to introduce change into someone else’s culture.

State an ethical principle in regards to intercultural communication.

Using the initial reaction paper you wrote defining culture and describing your own will be a good foundation for your final paper. Write in a manner that best suits you.

Elements to consider for inclusion: Historic instances of intercultural communication (economic, political or religious), current instances of intercultural communication, prejudice, racism, reverse discrimination, nonverbal communication, the eight critical concepts of intercultural communication, the definition of culture, assimilation, the media, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism. Again, do not simply define these things. Incorporate them into your thinking.
