After you have identified an inspection report analyse it with a focus on management and leadership issues in nursing and their implications for practice. Include in your answer a critique on elements of the report that may impact on the scope of nursing practice. Identify any personal or professional development needs for future nursing practice from your analysis of the report and study of relevant literature.
Guidelines
- Choose a relevant report from paediatric or adult nursing.
- Identify particular areas of interest to nurses.
- Focus on those elements that concern nurses rather than other health professionals.
- You can choose to divide your answer into sections such as Management and Leadership, Scope of Nursing Practice, Personal and Professional Development.
- The assignment should not be a description of the report it is a critical discussion making reference to the report.
- Include references to appropriate nursing literature.
- Include a copy of relevant sections only of your chosen report in your appendices.

- Introduce the issue your going to discuss
- State the purpose of inspections
- State whether you are discussing an inspection report, was it announced or unannounced inspection. What does reports such as HIQA have to say about the problem in general e.g. protecting vulnerable patients in care etc and what other literature research say about this problem.
- What does the health Act 2007,HSE NSP 2017, Healthy Ireland, Children first, discuss in relation to this issue, do they provide any legislative regulation, do they discuss inspections, quality monitoring in care settings and other research literature
- State that your going to discuss the issue(s) under the following headings Mgt and Leadership, scope of practice and personal and professional development / or what ever headings you choose.
- Link all of the above with recent reports, research articles etc

- Discuss the issue – is it related to mgt issues or staff issues or both
- How is compliance monitored by managers – inspections, spot checks
- What impact does inspections (Nurse Managers or HIQUA )have on patient lives –e.g dignified, caring, and respectful, improve patient care, on staff lives eg improve care of employees…..
- Are the barriers that contributes to this issue in the literature – time, work pressure, staff shortages, skill mix, education.
- What does the research literature/reports say in relation to this issue – National standards for safer better healthcare 2012 – promote better quality and health

SCOPE OF PRACTICE
- Define scope of practice for nurses
- Scope of practice what have they to say in general and relate it to your problem
- Code of professional conduct and ethics what do they discuss around this issue.
- TheNursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) what do they say in relation to your topic in general or your specific issue and their competency framework. Any other research literature to support this point to add to it……
- Look at local policy and national standards what do they discuss in general and or specific to your issue eg best practice. Is this local policy in clinical practice in relation to the issue being adhered to by all, if yes why only some, why not all, is it sufficient to guide staff, if not why not, does it need to be reviewed. What is the role of management in relation to the policy and staff use of same?
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- What can be done to improve and maintain this problem?
- What’s managers and leader role in this eg monitoring problem/provide training/reinforcing the importance of……and link to the clinical area…..discuss this using research articles.
- What is the staff nurses responsibility/accountability in relation to this problem? – Personal and professional development – lifelong learning to expand knowledge, competence to effectively practice nursing and link to clinical area

- What problem did the inspection fine, this paper has critically analysed the problem….what is the cause of this problem eg not adhering to local/national policy/guidelines
