First, choose one song (plus lyrics) and second, provide a textual analysis of the song using the “describe-interpret-evaluate” method discussed in class. Both listening to the song and reading the lyrics should contribute to your analysis. When listening, think about how the music (rhythm, pacing, sound, etc.) contributes to the meaning. To support your answer, bring in specific evidence from the song (e.g., direct quotes, specific references) when applicable.
Third, after providing your analysis, reflect on the ways that your own identity/positionality/context might have shaped the way you analyzed the song? Bring in direct references to course readings/class discussion into your answer.
Remember, critics within the same field often have different interpretations of texts. This is your interpretation, and feel free to be creative and think outside the box.
