Assignment Description.
Part A
In a study conducted, it was reported of many unethical academic behaviour among students, The study appears to be suggesting that part of the reason for such unethical business behaviour may stem from the fact that cheating has become more prevalent among business students (Chronicle of Higher Education, February 10, 2009). The article reported that 56% of business students admitted to cheating at some time during their academic career as compared to 47% of non-business students. Cheating has been a concern of the dean of the College of Business at Fantel Technology Institute for several years. Some faculty members in the college believe that cheating is more widespread at Fantel than at other institutes, while other faculty members think that cheating is not a major problem in the institute. To resolve some of these issues, the dean commissioned a study to assess the current ethical behaviour of business students at Fantel. As part of this study, an anonymous exit survey was administered to a sample of 90 business students from this year’s graduating class. Responses to the following questions were used to obtain data regarding three types of cheating.
- During your time at Fantel, did you ever present work copied off the Internet as your own?
Yes _________ No _________
- During your time at Fantel, did you ever copy answers off another student’s exam?
Yes _________ No _________
- During your time at Fantel, did you ever collaborate with other students on projects that were supposed to be completed individually?
Yes _________ No _________
Note: Any student who answered Yes to one or more of these questions was considered to have been involved in some type of cheating. Download the Excel dataset is labelled “Fantel dataset”. Use the dataset to answer the questions below.
Assume that α = 0.05. Work to 4-decimal points
You have been tasked with preparing a report for the dean of the college that summarizes your assessment of the nature of cheating by business students at Fantel Institute. See detail you are required to accomplish in your report below.
Question 1 (16 marks)
Provide a classification table of Fantel students who participated in the survey according to the following criteria:
- All business students who copied from internet [1mark]
- All business students who collaborated on individual projects [1mark]
- All business students who copied on exam [1mark]
- Comment on i, ii and iii. [2marks]
- All male students who copied from Internet [1mark]
- All male students who collaborated on individual projects [1mark]
vii. All male students who copied on exam [1mark]
viii. Comment on v, vi, and vii. [2marks]
- All female students who copied from Internet [1mark]
- All female students who collaborated on individual projects [1mark]
- All female students who copied on exam [1mark]
xii. Comment on ix, x and xi. [2marks]
xiii. What is the percentage of all business students surveyed who admitted to cheating at Fantel? [1mark]
Question 2
Formulate and conduct a hypothesis test to determine if the proportion of business students at Fantel Institute who were involved in some type of cheating is less than that of business students at other institutions as reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education. [16 marks]
Question 3
Provide any two recommendations to the dean based on your analysis of the data? [4 marks]
Part B
For digital camera buyers, selecting a camera with many options can be a difficult process, and price is certainly a key issue for them. By spending more, will a customer really get a superior camera? And, do cameras that have more megapixels, a factor often considered to be a good measure of picture quality, cost more than cameras with fewer megapixels? You work as a business analyst in an independent photography company. Your usual task is to analyse various digital camera data and provide results to customers which helps them make informed decisions when making camera purchases. Your analytics team have received some dataset of some digital camera tests conducted. The data was mined from a group of photographers which tested 166 different point-andshoot digital cameras. Based upon factors such as the number of megapixels, weight (g), image quality, and ease of use, they developed an overall score for each camera tested. The overall score ranges from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better overall test results. The MS Excel file, DigitalCamera.xlsx (available on Moodle course page) shows the brand, average retail price ($), number of megapixels, weight (g), and the overall score for 13 Canon and 15 Nikon subcompact cameras that were tested. Work to 4-decimal points.
Required
1a. Using overall score as the dependent variable, develop three scatter diagrams, one using price as the independent variable, one using the number of megapixels as the independent variable, and one using weight as the independent variable. [12 marks]
1b. Which of the three independent variables appears to be the best predictor of overall score? Justify your answer. [4 marks]
- Using simple linear regression, develop an estimated regression model that could be used to predict the overall score given the price, weight and megapixels of the camera. [10 marks]
- Using the observations for the Canon cameras only, provide a scatterplot and regression equation of price (independent variable) against score (dependent variable). [8 marks]
