Scenario:
A registered nurse in the Adult Day Care facility is caring for three patients diagnosed with depression. Each patient has been prescribed a different antidepressant agent. One patient is on a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, the second patient is on a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and the third patient is on a tricyclic antidepressant. What must the nurse know in order to provide quality care?
Question 1: Describe the biogenic theory of depression. List three (3) biogenic amines; and profile why the deficiencies are thought to occur. Cite references.
Question 2: Address the Critical Thinking Questions in the chapter related to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used for the patient D.J. Cite references.
Question 3: Regarding drug therapy across the lifespan, what concerns do nurses have when any antidepressant is prescribed for children? How are these considerations different when they are prescribed for the elderly?
